Seminars in Moral Philosophy Week 1 HT12

Event: Seminars in Moral Philosophy Week 1 HT12
Date & Time: 16th Jan 2012 4:30pm-6:30pm

Description:

Talk by Anthony Price (Birkbeck) ‘A Quietist Particularism’ to be held in the Lecture Room at the Philosophy Centre, 10 Merton Street.

Abstract

Section I follows Dancy in distinguishing reasons for actions from enablers or intensifiers of those reasons. It proposes that variations in valence are produced by a degree of generality in reasons. II is sceptical of Väyrynen’s claim that variable reasons have invariant groundings, and prefers a Wittgensteinian appeal to a heterogeneous framework of rules, values, paradigms. III is less realist than Dancy or Väyrynen about the metaphysical status of the reason-relation between facts and acts.

All philosophers are welcome to attend, and also to join the speaker for drinks after the talk, and later for dinner.
