Placement Scheme

General information

The Philosophy Faculty offers a Placement Service to assist current doctoral students and recent graduates who are seeking professional positions.

Each year a member of the Philosophy Faculty is assigned the position of Placement Officer in order to provide advice about applications and to help ensure that confidential letters of reference are distributed.

The current placement officer is Professor John Hawthorne (john.hawthorne@philosophy.ox.ac.uk)

The Philosophy Faculty recognizes the particular importance of providing assistance to those who wish to enter the US job market and, as well as arranging mock interviews, the Placement Officer attends the APA Eastern Division Meeting in order to provide support and advice during the interview period.

The Doctoral Thesis Seminar

As part of the preparation for applications the Faculty also offers a Doctoral Thesis Seminar in the Trinity Term of each year. The seminar is organized by two members of the Faculty and all graduate students are welcome to attend. The primary aim is to offer those who are close to finishing their doctorate the opportunity to give talks based on material that they propose to use for job applications in the coming year. A presentation and regular attendance at this seminar is considered a normal prerequisite for use of the Placement Service in the coming academic year.
