Conington Prizes are offered for a dissertation on a subject chosen by the writer and approved as appropriate by the Board of the Faculty of Philosophy or the Board of the Faculty of Classics. The value of the Prizes will be about £1,000.

The prize in 2016 will be offered within the field of Ancient Philosophy and Ideas.

Eligibility: general rules. The Prize is open to graduates of the University and to current members of the University. All applicants must, on 19 September 2016 (i) be qualified by examination for a degree of the University; (ii) have completed six years, and have not exceeded fifteen years, from their matriculation (except that graduates whose first degrees are from other universities shall have completed two years, and not exceeded eleven years, from their matriculation); and (iii) be of postdoctoral status, or equivalent.

Applications for permission to submit a dissertation for the 2016 Ancient Philosophy and Ideas Prize should be sent to the Head of Administration and Finance, Faculty of Philosophy, Radcliffe Humanities, Radcliffe Observatory Quarter, Woodstock Road, Oxford, OX2 6GG no later than 8 August 2016. Applications may be submitted by email to haf@philosophy.ox.ac.uk.

Three typed copies plus an electronic copy of the dissertation must reach the Head of Administration and Finance of the Philosophy Faculty, on or before 19 September 2016.

The Prize may not be awarded twice to the same person. Any previously unsuccessful competitor may resubmit his or her dissertation, or an amended version of it, on not more than two occasions.

The examiners may determine not to award the Prize in any year if no dissertation of sufficient merit is submitted.
