OUP Philosophy Festival: David Edmonds and Jeff McMahan
Closing the OUP Philosophy Festival 2017, David Edmonds and Jeff McMahan will discuss the lifetime and achievements of Derek Parfit (1942 – 2017). Derek Parfit is the author of the bestselling three volume collection 'On What Matters' and 'Reasons and Persons', one of the most influential books in philosophy of the last several decades.

The annual Oxford University Press Philosophy Festival, hosted by Blackwell's Bookshop, will run from Thursday 16th November until Sunday 19th November. This year the festival includes a range of free events, featuring an evening to celebrate the publication of Clare Chambers latest publication 'Against Marriage', the insightful Very Short Introduction Speed-dating event and a whole weekend of talks and discussions.
Dr David Edmonds, OUC Distinguished Research Fellow and Consultant Researcher
David is a presenter and award winning documentary maker for BBC radio. His favourite programme was entitled Can God can make a breakfast so big He can’t eat it? He is the author, co-author or editor of 10 books which have been translated into 25 languages. They include, with John Eidinow, the international bestseller Wittgenstein’s Poker – for which Bill Clinton has acted as (unpaid) promoter. More recently, Would You Kill The Fat Man? received a three page review in The New York Review of Books and was picked as Editor’s Choice in the New York Times. Philosophers Take On The World (2016), is an edited book of some of the best contributions to the Uehiro blog. David is the host of Philosophy 24/7 http://philosophy247.org/ and with Nigel Warburton he co-runs Philosophy Bites (www.philosophybites.com), the popular philosophy podcast which has had over 30 million downloads. David has two philosophy degrees from Oxford and a PhD in philosophy from the Open University. He has held fellowships at the University of Chicago and the University of Michigan.
Professor Jeff McMahan, OUC Distinguished Research Fellow
Jeff McMahan is White's Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Oxford and a Distinguished Research Fellow with the Oxford Uehiro Centre. He studied at Oxford and Cambridge and works in normative and applied ethics, political philosophy, and legal theory. His books include The Ethics of Killing: Problems at the Margins of Life (Oxford, 2002) and Killing in War (Oxford, 2009). The second of these is based on the Uehiro lectures he gave in Oxford in 2006.
