The Faculty of Philosophy, University of Oxford, in association with Oriel College, wishes to appoint a part-time (0.5 FTE) Departmental Lecturer in Philosophy of Science to cover the teaching and other duties of a permanent postholder while she takes up a period of externally-funded research leave. This post is for a fixed-term of 24 months and will commence on 1 October 2018 or as soon thereafter as possible, in any case finishing on 30 September 2020. The person appointed will be expected to provide undergraduate and graduate teaching in Philosophy of Science. This will include designing and delivering 16 hours of lectures or graduate classes for the Faculty in each academic year, and delivering an average of 4 weighted hours of teaching per week during term time for Oriel College. Teaching for Oriel will include first year logic, and (for second or third years) philosophy of science, but ability to teach other topics in the Oxford philosophy syllabus will be an advantage.
The appointed person will also conduct research in Philosophy of Science, taken to include the philosophy of a specific natural or life science, or of the social sciences. They will undertake administration for the Faculty and the College including, but not limited to, participating in the annual admissions exercises and acting as assessor for undergraduate and graduate examinations. They will be expected to have the ability to contribute to first year logic examining in particular. The precise configuration of duties will be agreed on appointment.
