| Description | Philip Petit (Princeton) ‘A Genealogy of the Concept of Promising’, to be held in the Lecture Room, 10 Merton Street, Oxford - Seminars in Moral Philosophy webpage
Abstract: A naturalistic genealogy of the concept of promising, if successful, would show how naturalistically unproblematic agents might have come by naturalistically unproblematic stages to develop a practice that would give them a use for the concept, as we broadly understand it, of promising. Without offering a straightforward naturalistic reduction, it would advance two purposes: make the concept naturalistically intelligible and give us a better understanding of what it requires. This presentation will sketch a candidate genealogy of that kind. |
