| Description | Luke Russell (Sydney) 'Evil and Extremity' to be held in the Lecture Room, 10 Merton Street, Oxford - Seminars in Moral Philosophy webpage Abstract The notion of evil is under dispute. Some people believe that there is no such thing as evil, while others maintain that evil is a crucial moral concept with many applications in the real world. In defending the concept of evil our first task is to say more clearly what it is for an action to be evil. It is plausible that all evil actions are extreme culpable wrongs, yet it remains unclear exactly which is the requisite notion of extremity. In this paper I consider whether evils are extremely harmful wrongs, or incomprehensible wrongs, or life-wrecking wrongs. |
