| Description | Tom Pink (UCL) 'Freedom, choice and autonomy' to be held in the Lecture Room, 10 Merton Street, Oxford - Seminars in Moral Philosophy webpage Abstract What role does the notion of freedom play in ethics; and why has the idea of autonomy come to seem so important to modern ethical theory? The paper looks at the dsappearance of a once dominant conception of the ethical significance of freedom. It discusses the deeply effective attack on that conception made by Thomas Hobbes, and examines whether modern appeals to autonomy can fill the gap in ethical theory which that conception left behind. |
