Elijah Millgram (Utah): ‘Mill’s Incubus’ to be held in the Lecture Room, 10 Merton Street, Oxford - Seminars in Moral Philosophy webpage
When John Stuart Mill emerged from his first nervous breakdown, he attributed the recovery from the "Mental Crisis" to, among other things, having solved the problem of freedom of the will. But what could a philosophical problem of this sort have to do with a lapse into clinical depression? I will explain Mill's surprising understanding of a free will, and sketch an explanation of what makes it a problem. Then I will say something about what his very practical solution to it was, and what it tells us about Mill's mature understanding of utility.
