| Description | David McNaughton (Florida State) 'Consequentialism, Reasons, Benefits, and the Good' to be held in the Lecture Room, 10 Merton Street, Oxford - Moral Philosophy Seminar webpage Abstract We explore the relationships among consequentialism, practical reasons, benefits and the good. While, in the end, we reject consequentialism, en route to that conclusion we’ll argue that, partly by paying careful attention to such matters as the distinction between benefits and the good, the view can cover more of the practical territory than some of its opponents suppose. Failure to keep in mind that distinction has bedeviled a number of classic discussions, including famous defences of deontology by Butler and by Ross. |
