| Description | Candace Vogler (University of Chicago) 'You Owe it to Yourself' to be held in the Lecture Room, 10 Merton Street, Oxford - Seminars in Moral Philosophy webpage Abstract The thought that I owe things to myself is familiar from advertising and intimate conversation. It is also crucial to Kant's moral philosophy and to some strands of neo-Kantianism. In this talk, I argue against one neo-Kantian defense of the claim that a practical orientation alert to the demands of morality turns on my duties to myself, give a reading of Kant on the topic, and conclude that neither provides a plausible justification for the claim. In conclusion, I turn to self-interest, and the more ordinary circumstances in which we might think that we owe ourselves many things. |
