Centenary Visiting Professor in Philosophy, Politics and Economics 2025-26

The Faculty of Philosophy is delighted to welcome Professor Nancy Cartwright FBA FAcSS as the Centenary Visiting Professor in Philosophy, Politics and Economics  2025-26.

When not visiting at Oxford Nancy holds permanent positions half-time at Durham University and the University of California at San Diego. She specialises in the philosophy and methodology of the social and economic sciences with special attention recently to evidence-based policy and to how to make more reliable predictions about policy outcomes. She has done considerable work throughout her career on causal inference, on what makes for reliable science, on scientific realism, on how better to put scientific knowledge to use and on philosophy of social technology. She previously worked at Stanford University, where she specialised in the philosophy of physics, and the London School of Economics, where she switched her interests from physics to the social and economic sciences.
