Scrutinising Effective Altruism – Should Effectiveness Govern Our Ethics?

Speakers: Hilary Greaves and Thomas Sinclair

Venue and Time: Oxford Quaker Meeting House (43 St Giles, Oxford OX1 3LW), 7-8:30pm

Abstract: A critical discussion between Hilary Greaves (Professor of Philosophy, Merton College) and Thomas Sinclair (Associated Professor of Philosophy, Wadham College) about what relationship, if any, our ethical obligations have to the principles of Effective Altruism. Speakers will provide their views on this question and have an opportunity to engage with each other’s perspective, identifying points of agreement and disagreement and the reasons behind them. Hosted by Effective Altruism Oxford.

Note: Effective Altruism is a philosophy and social movement that aims to use evidence and reason to determine the most effective ways to benefit others. This might be, for example, by identifying and donating to cost-effective charities, or by pursuing a career in a highly impactful cause area.
