The Faculty is very saddened to hear of the death of our colleague Bill Newton-Smith on 8 April 2023. Canadian by birth, Bill came to Oxford to do his D Phil after taking a degree in Mathematics and Philosophy at Queen’s University in Ontario and an MA in Philosophy from Cornell. Known to many philosophers as the author of The Rationality of Science (1981), Bill was Fellow and Tutor in Philosophy at Balliol College from 1970-2005, where he also served as Senior Tutor (1978-1981) and Praefectus of Hollywell Manor. In his later years, he was instrumental in the founding of the Central European University after many years working to help scholars and students living under communist regimes in Central and East Europe.
