TORCH Medical Humanities, or MedHum, has won the 2025 Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Research Culture for its interdisciplinary and collaborative approach to health and medicine.
With a number of philosophers as contributors and project leads, the research hub promotes and supports health and medicine research that is based in the humanities and social sciences and aims to increase awareness of how the humanities contribute to a proper, holistic understanding of medicine, health, and disease. Christine Gerrard, Director of TORCH, has explained how "MedHum provides a radical corrective to the common assumption that cutting-edge research and innovation in healthcare and medical treatments lie solely within the domain of physicians and laboratories."
