Jonathan Krude: 'Heidegger on Overcoming Metaphysics'
Chair: Niklas Welch
Abstract: For Heidegger, our time is the final epoch of what he calls the history of metaphysics. In his own work, he aims to prepare the move beyond the limitations of metaphysical thinking. In my talk, I attempt to reconstruct Heidegger’s notion of metaphysics. I show that for him, all metaphysics is characterised by an understanding of entities and Being that fails to keep them clearly apart in their respective roles. I then discuss some of the major accounts of Heidegger’s attempt at post-metaphysical thinking. I show how their imprecise understanding of Heidegger’s definition of metaphysics leads to reconstructions of his project that effectively turn it into just another metaphysical picture. In the end, I briefly sketch an alternative account of Heidegger’s idea of post-metaphysical thinking.
