Early Career Work in Progress Seminar (Tuesday - Week 5, HT26)

Abstract: Demanding normative theories are normative theories that require a lot from us. Deliberative extra-normativism is the nascent view that identifying the relevant normative facts does not settle deliberation—upon identifying the relevant normative facts, there remains a further deliberative question whether to do what we ought to do. I argue that demanding normative theories and deliberative extra-normativism are mutually supportive. Demanding normative theories support deliberative extra-normativism in the sense that we can deliberatively choose to act contrarily to demanding normative requirements. And deliberative extra-normativism supports demanding normative theories by explaining the objectionability of over-demandingness in a way that does not count against the truth of demanding normative theories.
