Abstract: When thinking about what makes our behaviour authentic, we often think in terms of what makes it reflective of the self. What makes this behaviour an authentic expression of emotion is a further question still. I argue that expressions of emotion are less authentic the more they are modulated by non-emotional mental states, such as an intention to communicate. I explain the normative value of authentic expression in terms of the quality of self-knowledge it stands to generate about our emotions.
