Abstract: The good news is that there is now an active debate about AI safety and Responsible AI, particularly since generative AI captured the imagination of governments and the public following the spectacular launch of ChatGPT. Before that, academia and a limited group of professionals in government, business and technology were working on these issues but this was considered by many to be a niche area. The main debate now seems to be between those in favour of regulation and those arguing for self-regulation because, they claim, regulation will stifle innovation. But is it really that simple? Don’t we all have a critical role to play in shaping the future of this powerful technology which will help to determine the future of society and the world we live in?
