Abstract: Let us use the term ‘localist’ for someone who thinks that there is an intelligible notion of a borderline case in terms of which the more general notion of vagueness can be understood.  I wish in this paper to raise an issue for the localist: how should someone respond when confronted with a borderline case?  I shall argue that principles which the localist should accept lead to the conclusion that there is no rational response to a borderline case.
