Rory Madden (UCL): 'A Temporal Approach to Phenomenal Unity'
Abstract: It is widely held that there is a distinctively phenomenal sense in which a subject's simultaneous experiences are unified. This talk explores the simple but neglected view that the phenomenal unity of simultaneous experiences consists in their seeming simultaneity. The view is developed on the basis of H.P. Grice’s related proposal about a 'total temporary state'. The approach is shown to have considerable advantages over existing views of phenomenal unity.
