The Ockham Society (Thursday - Week 7, TT23)

Ockham Society

I will discuss a potential account of the relation between mental and physical properties, particularly including experiential properties, which retains materialist commitments while postulating an account of the relation between these mental and physical properties. This will be argued to avoid several problems which affect other proposals in the philosophy of mind. The discussion will rely on an analogy from physics, that of X-Ray diffraction, which allows us to conceptualize a possible form for the relation between mind and body. The resulting position will be contrasted with several other positions in the philosophy of mind, particularly that of Naturalistic Dualism.
