Workshop in Ancient Philosophy (Thursday - Week 4, MT19)

Workshop in Ancient Philosophy

Double and half, states and dispositions, master and slave, similar and dissimilar, knowledge and sense-perception are all discussed as relatives by Aristotle. Moreover, there are such relatives as being on the right or being on the left that the Stoics place into their fourth genus, namely that of being relatively disposed in a certain way. I will discuss why Plotinus thinks that relatives can only be explained by introducing relations and how the difference between different kinds of relation accounts for the difference between different kinds of relatives.

If you would like to join the speaker for dinner after the seminar, please email the chair by Tuesday before the workshop.
