Early Career Work in Progress Seminar (Tuesday - Week 1, MT25)

Abstract: It is sometimes said that human beings have ‘a need to belong’, but what does this mean? In this paper, I distinguish two general needs we might have in mind: the need to live in a community and the need to live in a community in which one belongs. Furthermore, I argue that in understanding the latter notion, we must distinguish two kinds of belonging: belonging in a group and belonging in a place. Finally, I distinguish this from the notion of attachment (to a place or a group).
