Philipp Schwab (Universität Freiburg): 'From Finitude to Historicity: Heidegger’s “Discovery” of Hegel'
Abstract: The lecture attempts to shed some light on the notion of historicity (in terms of Geschichtlichkeit) in dialogue with Heidegger and Hegel, and specifically with Heidegger’s own dialogue with Hegel. In particular, the lecture intends to unravel a certain ‘discovery’ of Hegel in Heidegger’s thought around 1929/30: At the height of his ‘Metaphysics of Dasein’ period, in which he intends to put forward an own ‘metaphysics of finitude’, Heidegger quite suddenly discovers Hegel as the main interlocutor to engage with in a deepened dialogue with the history of metaphysics as onto-theology. This discovery incites a certain shift (not to say ‘turn’, Kehre) in Heidegger’s understanding of historicity, turning away from his focus on Dasein. At the same time, the dialogue with Hegel has significant and long-lasting implications for Heidegger’s later thought, especially regarding the concept of an ‘end’ (or ‘culmination’) of metaphysics as well as aspects of teleology and eschatology in Heidegger’s understanding of the ‘history of Being’.
