Workshop in Ancient Philosophy (Thursday - Week 4, HT26)

Workshop in Ancient Philosophy

Abstract: The core of my paper will involve a close reading of Philebus 52d7-53c3 with particular attention to its central notions of purity and of truth and their relation to each other. I will consider this passage both in its local context and in the broader context of the dialogue's overall project.  I will conclude by advancing a tentative view of how this talk of truth relates to the truth and falsehood earlier ascribed to anticipatory pleasures and pains (elpides) no less than to beliefs or opinions (doxai).

Registration: If you do not hold a university card, please contact the seminar convenor or admin@philosophy.ox.ac.uk at least two working days before a seminar to register your attendance.
