Marco Grossi (New College): 'More varieties of risk'
Abstract: Risk is standardly seen as a measure of severity and probability. In this talk I discuss whether risk is "plural". I define three grades of risk pluralism, and defend the strongest version: even if one fixes one specific risk-bearer, there is more than one risk-property, and at least one risk-property is not probabilistic but rather "modal". According to this modal notion, something is risky only if it is "easily possible" where that "easily" is not probabilistically defined. I will then discuss some features of modal risk, and show how probabilistic and modal risk diverge in systematic ways.
Registration: If you do not hold a university card, please contact the seminar convenor or admin@philosophy.ox.ac.uk at least two working days before a seminar to register your attendance.
