Philosophy of Maths Reading Group

This Hilary term, the philosophy of mathematics reading group will run every Wednesday, weeks 1-8 from 4-5pm in the Lecture Room (2nd floor, Radcliffe Humanities Building). Everyone is welcome. Reading the papers would be encouraged but people are welcome regardless. All questions, thoughts, and contributions are strongly invited. The papers are chosen week by week, depending on the interests and questions of the group. Practical Ethics and Law Lecture

'My body, my choice: exploring the limits of consent'

Speaker: Professor Alex Ruck Keene KC (Hon) (Visiting Professor at the Dickson Poon School of Law, King’s College London; Visiting Senior Lecturer, Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, King’s College London; Research Affiliate, Essex Autonomy Project, University of Essex)

Abstract: From birth to death, from late-term abortion on the basis of the disability of the foetus, to choices about puberty blockers to the demand to legalise assistance with dying, our bodies have become legal battle-grounds. How far are we entitled to assert that it is simply a matter of our choice – and who gets to decide when and how we have the right to make that choice?
