Title: 'Synthetic practical judgment, creativity and agency'
Abstract:
In this paper, I introduce the concept of synthetic practical judgment. Synthetic practical judgment is the principal vehicle of our practical creativity. It is what enables us to go beyond what is simply given in the values and rules we know. It is also what allows us to harmonize our ends with those of others. And, in a more minimal sense, it describes the basic structure of action, so that the flow of action is also a flow of synthetic practical judgment. It is therefore a fundamental feature of our agency. Understanding the importance of synthetic practical judgment has the potential to transform how we frame key questions in ethics and social philosophy.
