Alexandra Zinke (University of Frankfurt): 'Induction and Independence. A New Solution to Goodman’s Old Riddle'
Abstract: Goodman’s infamous grue-problem poses a significant challenge to the validity of enumerative induction. This talk offers a solution to Goodman’s problem based on the concept of doxastic independence. It argues that the difference in confirmation between the green- and the grue-hypothesis stems from the fact that only the former is doxastically independent of a defeating background belief. This solution strategy will be implemented both in an extended version of AGM belief revision theory and in Bayesian confirmation theory.
The talk is based on joined work with Wolfgang Freitag.
