The Ockham Society (Thursday - Week 5, MT25)

Ockham Society

Abstract: Alison Hills presents an account of understanding why p according to which understanding is factive - the explanation must be true - but it does not require knowledge - I needn’t know why p to understand why p. I argue that this is wrong. I show that her account commits her to attributing understanding in some highly unattractive cases, and I give a general argument - grounded in independently plausible requirements on acting for reasons - for why we should expect understanding to require knowledge. I then give an error for why Hills has the intuitions she does for her central cases.
