Workshop in Ancient Philosophy

Chair: Amber Carpenter

Abstract: This paper discusses a possible debate between Plato and the early Academy, on the one hand, and Aristotle, on the other, concerning the cause of heavenly motion. It also suggests that Aristotle may be among the polemical targets of Plato’s Laws 10 and the Epinomis, particularly in their claim that any theory that neglects the causal priority of the soul over the body is bound to atheism.

Registration: If you do not hold a university card, please contact the seminar convenor or admin@philosophy.ox.ac.uk at least two working days before a seminar to register your attendance.

If you would like to go out to dinner with the speaker, then please contact the chair of the meeting before the Tuesday preceding the talk. The meals of the chair and the speaker are covered by the faculty; others attend at their own expense.

Workshop in Ancient Philosophy Convenors: Alexander Bown (MT), Marion Durand (HT), Ursula Coope (TT).
